Fine Art Backdrops | 4 Must-Haves for Newborn & Maternity Photography with Lindsay Walden

Years ago I recognized that some of the most important images I capture for my clients are the images of mothers with their children. As moms, we have a tendency to always be the ones standing behind the camera capturing all of the memories versus being in those images. I’ll never forget the day I sat with my daughter looking through an album of beautiful images from a trip to Hawaii years prior. After flipping through the album my daughter asked, “Mom, where were you when we went on this trip?” I was confused for a minute until I realized that she didn’t remember me being there because there were no images of me included in the album. I thought to myself, “Of course I was there! Who captured all of those beautiful memories!?” But my daughter couldn’t remember me being there because there were no visual reminders to stir her memories of me.

This is why I am passionate about encouraging new moms and soon-to-be moms to be in photographs. We want to be present in these images for the little people in our lives who mean the world to us. Our children will treasure these images of us when they are older. We remind moms how important these images are and then make it easy for them by providing professional hair and makeup, stunning gowns, and gorgeous backdrops.

A really beautiful photo often starts with the backdrop. The Fine Art Line backdrops from Intuition Backgrounds by Becky Gregory are my absolute favorite to use for both maternity and newborn photography sessions. They are versatile and can be photographed in many different ways.

We adore the Juliette Light backdrop. It is our most requested backdrop. The soft pastel hues and subtle floral patterns are stunning. We often photograph mothers both during their pregnancy and then at the newborn session for a sweet before and after set of images.

The Juliette Peach is a similarly popular option, especially for mothers with their sweet little girls.

When we want a classic look and feel to our images the Hale backdrop is perfect. The neutral hue of greys with mottled shadows and highlights provide interest to the backdrop without distraction. The Hale makes for the most perfectly balanced backdrop for a timeless image.  I also love how you can alter the look of the background based on how you adjust the lighting. This applies to all of the Fine Art backdrops. You can have a very different look and feel to your image depending on how the light hits the backdrop. 

When I want a classic background with a touch of color my go-to is the Romeo backdrop.  This drop has a mix of lovely colors that complement so many of our gown colors. 



The larger size of these backdrops makes for easy editing. Our images are near perfect straight out of camera, and we love how durable the canvas texture is. We use them extensively.
